Gate repair in Argyle, TX

Our shop is on Stonecrest Road, which makes Argyle the one city where we can usually be at a gate the same day. It's also the city where gates fail for reasons that have nothing to do with the gate: the entrance is a quarter mile from the house, the power is marginal, and the wind comes across open pasture with nothing to slow it down.

Argyle's lot pattern is the whole story. Between US 377, FM 407, Old Justin Road, and Crawford Road, a large share of properties sit on one to ten acres with the driveway entrance set at the road and the house well back from it. That geometry creates three problems a suburban gate never has.

Voltage drop. A 120V circuit run several hundred feet on undersized wire arrives at the operator weaker than it left. The gate works fine in mild weather, then starts stalling on cold mornings when the motor draws more current to break the gate loose. Owners replace the operator; the new one does the same thing, because the problem was never the operator.

No landline. Traditional telephone entry systems assume a copper pair at the gate. On most Argyle acreage there isn't one, and there never will be. Cellular call boxes solve it, but they carry a monthly data plan and they need adequate signal at the entrance — which is worth verifying before the equipment is ordered, not after.

Wind with nothing in front of it. A solid-infill gate across an open pasture entrance is a sail. We see leaves twisted at the hinge, posts pulled out of plumb, and operator arms bent because a gate designed for a sheltered subdivision was installed in open country.

Solar, trenched, or neither

The single most consequential decision on an Argyle gate is how it gets power. Solar is marketed hard and works genuinely well within its limits — and fails badly outside them. Here is the honest comparison we give homeowners on site.

Ground conditions

Cross Timbers sand doesn't hold a post like clay does

Argyle sits in the Eastern Cross Timbers belt, where soils tend toward sandy loam over Woodbine sands rather than the heavy black clay of the Blackland Prairie east of I-35. That's good news for drainage and bad news for lateral bearing.

A gate post resists the overturning force of a swinging leaf through the soil around its footing. Sandy soil gives up that resistance more readily than stiff clay, so a footing sized by habit rather than by condition lets the post rake back over a season or two. The symptom the owner sees is a gate that scrapes the ground at the latch end and won't stay in alignment no matter how many times the hinges get adjusted.

The fix is not more hinge adjustment. It's a properly sized footing, and on failed installations that usually means pulling the post and starting over.

  • Footing diameter and depth relative to leaf length and weight
  • Whether the post is raked back or the hinges have simply worn
  • Water standing at the base of the post after rain
  • Infill density versus wind exposure at that specific entrance
  • Whether the operator is fighting the gate — a bound gate destroys operators

Long leaves on open acreage are frequently better served by converting to a slide or cantilever arrangement, if the driveway geometry allows it.

An automated gate across a private drive is an obstruction to emergency apparatus unless it's equipped to be opened by responders. Departments serving Denton County generally expect an approved method — commonly a Knox-brand key switch, a siren-activated device, or a coded override — and the specific requirement is set by the department with jurisdiction over your address.

Two practical notes. First, whatever device is installed has to be tested; we find plenty of Knox switches that were wired to a dead terminal years ago and have never actually worked. Second, if your gate loses power, there must be a manual release that a first responder can operate without tools.

Sometimes, and it depends on four numbers: how many times the gate cycles per day, how much the leaf weighs, how much sun the panel location gets in December rather than June, and whether you want accessories on the same battery. A single-family entrance with six to ten cycles a day, a light picket leaf, and clear southern exposure is a good solar candidate. A property with two working adults, teenagers, ranch help, and regular deliveries usually isn't — and it will fail in winter, not summer, which is why the problem often shows up months after installation.

My gate worked for years and now it stalls on cold mornings.

That pattern points at supply voltage or a binding gate rather than a failed board. Cold weather increases the current a motor needs to start, and it stiffens grease in hinges and rollers. If the circuit to the gate is a long run on wire that was undersized at install, the operator sees a voltage sag exactly when it needs the most power. We measure voltage at the operator under load — not at rest, which will read fine and tell you nothing.

Can you build an entrance to match masonry columns we already have?

Yes, and this is common on Argyle and Lantana properties where the stone or brick columns went in with the house and the gate came later or is being replaced. We measure the actual clear opening between the columns, check the columns for a mounting substrate that will take hinge loads, and fabricate to that dimension. Where columns can't carry the load, we set independent steel posts behind the masonry so the stonework isn't doing structural work it was never built for.

Yes. The entrance is usually not just a gate — it's columns, wing fence, pipe rail, sometimes a cattle guard and an entry sign. We fabricate and install the whole assembly, which avoids the common outcome where the gate is done by one company, the fence by another, and the two don't line up.
