Gate openers & access control

The operator moves the gate. The access control decides who gets to make it move. The safety devices decide when it must not move at all. Most gate problems that look electrical are really one of these three doing its job while the other two are misconfigured.

Choosing an operator

Class rating, not opening width

UL 325 sorts gate operators into four classes by the kind of site they serve. Getting this wrong is the most common and most expensive specification error in the trade — and it is nearly always discovered years later, when equipment fails early and repeatedly.

A Class I operator on an apartment entrance will work — for a while. Then it fails, gets replaced with the same thing, and fails again on the same schedule. If your property is on its third operator in five years, the class rating is the first thing worth examining.

How people get through the gate

Telephone entry & call boxes

A visitor selects a resident and the box calls them. Traditional units dial over copper phone lines that carriers are steadily retiring; cellular units replace that with a data plan and usually cost less to run.

Keypads & codes

Simple and universally understood. The weakness is code hygiene — a code shared with vendors, sitters, and former residents stops being access control and becomes a formality.

RFID & credentials

Windshield tags and proximity cards let a resident through without stopping. Credentials can be individually revoked, which is the real advantage over a shared code.

The familiar clicker. Still the most reliable method for a single household, and the easiest to lose track of across a community over time.

Vehicle detection

Loops cut into the pavement, or probes buried alongside it, that sense a vehicle to open on exit and to prevent closing on a car. A failing loop produces maddening intermittent faults.

Emergency access

Fire departments need to get through a gate. Depending on the jurisdiction that means a Knox key switch, a siren-activated device, or a coded override — and it must actually be wired and working.

Two independent means of entrapment protection

UL 325 requires that an automatic gate have at least two independent ways of detecting that something is in its path and stopping. In practice that is usually photo eyes plus either an inherent force sensor built into the operator or a physical edge sensor on the gate.

The failure we find most often is not a broken safety device. It is a safety device that was deliberately bypassed — a photo eye disconnected because it nuisance-tripped, an edge sensor jumpered out, or a force setting raised until the gate pushes through whatever it was hitting.

Every one of those makes the gate work again. Every one of them removes the protection that stops a gate closing on a child or a vehicle. We do not do it, and when we find it we document it, because for an HOA or a commercial property owner that finding matters well beyond the gate.

Common questions

Our phone line at the gate is being discontinued. What now?

Convert the call box to cellular. Modern units use a data connection instead of a copper pair, which removes the landline bill and is generally more reliable. The one thing to check first is signal strength at the actual box location — a marginal signal produces intermittent call failures that are harder to live with than a clean outage.

How do we stop everyone in town knowing our gate code?

Move away from a single shared code. Individual codes per household, temporary codes for vendors that expire, or credentials that can be revoked one at a time all solve it. On a community entrance this usually pairs with a credential purge, since the working population of codes and clickers is often much larger than the resident population.

Our gate sometimes does not open when we drive up.

Intermittent behaviour on approach points at the exit loop or the vehicle detector rather than the operator. Loops are wire cut into the pavement, and they fail from pavement cracking, water intrusion, or being cut during other work. The symptom is exactly this: works most of the time, then does not, with no pattern the driver can see.

Can the fire department get through our gate?

Only if something on site is set up to let them, and only if it has been tested. We find Knox switches wired to dead terminals with some regularity — installed years ago, never verified, and nobody would find out until it mattered. We test emergency access as part of service on automated entrances.
